Canon Theatre

Canon Theatre244 Victoria Street
Downtown Toronto

The Canon Theatre is in the heart of the Entertainment district, close to the Eaton Centre, the PATH underground mall system and the Air Canada Centre.

The Canon Theatre began its life in 1920 as a combination vaudeville and motion picture theatre. With its original 3373 seats, it was the largest cinema in Canada and, with its lavish interior - designed by the great theatre architect Thomas Lamb - the most elegant. After major renovations in 1989, the new, beautifully refurbished theatre opened its doors as "The Pantages Theatre" for Andrew Lloyd Webber's musical, The Phantom of the Opera.

In July, 2001, a pledge of support from Canon Canada, Inc. guaranteed the continued life and health of an important, historic and beautiful showplace. In recognition, the theatre was renamed The Canon Theatre. In 2008 the theatre was purchased by Mirvish Productions, owner of the Princess of Wales and Royal Alexandra theatres.
