260 King Street West
Downtown Toronto
The Royal Alexandra Theatre is a masterpiece of beaux-arts architecture. At 101 years old, this is the oldest continuously operating legitimate theatre in North America. The 1,500 seat Toronto theatre is crafted with imported marble, hand carved cherry-wood and ornate gilded plaster atop Toronto's first steel framed structure allowing for a cantilevered design which eliminated the viewing obstructions common with wooden structures. The Royal Alexandra Theatre offers wonderful seating on the orchestra floor and on two balcony levels.
Nominated for five Tony Awards, the hit musical Rock of Ages has taken Toronto - and the "Royal Alex" - by storm!
Today, when you step inside this prestigious downtown Toronto theatre - you are stepping into a 1987 rock musical complete with the feel of a nightclub on the Sunset Strip. The audience is definetly a part of this show - and like any nightclub there is full drink service right at your seats!
More About the History of the Royal Alexandra Theatre in Toronto
In 1907 Cawthra Mulock, a young Toronto stock broker, sought to put his home town of Toronto on the cultural map by building for it "the finest theatre on the continent." In 1963 Edwin "Honest Ed" Mirvish purchased the Royal Alexandra from the Mulock estate and closed the theatre for extensive modernization, repair and renovation, restoring the old house to the splendour of its early days. Mr. Mirvish personally oversaw the operation of the theatre for the next 23 years, until 1986 when he handed management and administration over to his son, David, and David's company, Mirvish Productions.
The Royal Alexandra was named a National Historic Monument in 1987, on its 80th birthday.
