Toronto Islands

Toronto IslandsSeparating the city of Toronto from Lake Ontario is a crescent shaped series of small islands known as the Toronto Islands. Originally a peninsula, a major storm in the late 1850’s carved out a number of inlets, and separated the land into a chain of islands. Today, the islands provide a large protected harbour for boaters and sailors.

Some of the Toronto Islands are joined by bridges, while others are accessible only by boat. Although considered a parkland area, there are people living on the islands and they have a small airport located just offshore, in the harbourfront area.

CentrevilleThousands of people visit the Toronto Islands every summer looking to enjoy the parks and beaches. The City of Toronto funds ferries from the Harbourfront area, and Cruise Boats from Harbourfront Cruise services also offer daily public and private charter cruises through the Islands. The islands have their own amusement park, and in days past offered a resort, theatre, dance hall and several hotels. There was a baseball park where Babe Ruth hit his first professional homerun.

The Toronto Islands are home to three of Toronto’s Yacht clubs: the Island Yacht Club, the Queen City Yacht Club and the Royal Canadian Yacht Club, as well as a local sailing club. There is a 200 year-old lighthouse on Gibraltar Point, the southern-most tip of the islands.
